Evidence

        1a: an outward sign
        1b: something that furnishes proof

- Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

In their pursuit of proof of the paranormal, individuals are often too quick to jump to the assumption that findings are paranormal in nature.  In the section following this text, you will see two prime examples of evidence that would often times be misconstrued as paranormal in nature.

A TRUE orb is believed to be a manifestations of spiritual energy.  However, most of the time, the orbs that are captured on film or digital camera are nothing more than the reflection of a light source, such as the sun, a camera's flash, or a flashlight, reflecting off of a particle of dust floating in the air.
This photo is the perfect example of such an occurrence.  It was snapped at approximately 11:30pm at an old graveyard just outside of Gettysburg, PA.  My wife and I had just arrived, and I had leaned against a stone wall on the road side of the cemetery, disrupting a large amount of debris.

As the photo above was taken I was actually able to see several of the dust particles when the digital camera's flash went off.
Now, if you look at the photo to the left, taken from the same position after the dust had a moment to settle, there are no "orbs" in the picture.

I don't blame individuals for their desire to label the average "orb" something paranormal, but when the situation and evidence are carefully examined, those orbs can often be dismissed as something natural.

Recently, at an investigation of the chapel at Bucksteep Manor in Washington, Mass., Dave Tango from TAPS and I found that if we knocked on or bumped the pews, tons of dust particles were set airborne.

matrixing001.jpg

There is a phenomenon called matrixing which often causes enthusiasts to jump to the conclusion that something is paranormal.  This is when an individual's mind seeks out familiar shapes and qualities of an image (such as a photograph) and tricks them into believing that something is there which is not.
That might be a hard concept to wrap your mind around from my description, but look at this image to the left.  I had SEVERAL individuals look at the pattern that I circled in that image and believe that it was the apparition of a soldier.
Why?  Well, I let the individuals know that this photograph was shot at one of the bloodiest spots on the Gettysburg Battlefield.  Those individuals were all familiar with photographs (of apparitions) that were taken on the battlefield that resembled the silhouette of fallen confederate and union soldiers.  Putting those facts together with the roughly shaped, human outline, portrayed in this picture, their minds tricked them into believing that this was a picture of such an apparition.  However, this is actually just a picture of a boulder and a tree which came together perfectly in this photograph to form what looked like the outline of a person.  In other words, matrixing.
