Residual Hauntings

  • These are believed to be the most common types of hauntings.  They are said to be the result of residual energy that has been captured in a particular location, or associated with a particular object.  This energy is stored like data on an audio or a video recorder.  In turn, apparitions, "phantom sounds," images, or odors experienced in these types of hauntings are like a recorded playback of another time.  The activity often occurs around the same time of day or year.  Furthermore, when a residual haunting occurs there is no interaction between living beings and the spirit associated with the haunting.   In other words, the spirit does not know you are there.
Traditional / Intelligent Hauntings
  • This type of haunting is much more rare than the residual haunting.  However, it is the one that people are probably most familiar with.  An intelligent haunting occurs when an individual either dies in such an abrupt manner that they don't realize they have passed, or they refuse to "crossover" because they feel they have unfinished business to take care of (caring for loved ones, telling their story, protecting their home).  When an intelligent haunting occurs, the spirit is very aware of the presence of other beings.  The spirit might interact with individuals directly by communicating verbally, or they may intentionally open windows, unlock doors, move objects, etc.  The fact that these things are done out of an awareness of living beings is what makes this an intelligent haunting.
Demonic / Inhuman Haunting
  •  This haunting has similar characteristics to that of an intelligent haunting, but the energy present is usually tied to an individual or location based out of the emotion of anger.  Furthermore, the entity present in such a haunting is believed to be something other than human.
